About Amra Kaj Kory (AKK)

Empowering communities, building futures since 1985.

Who We Are

Amra Kaj Kory(AKK) is a non-government development organization founded in 1985 in response to a devastating tornado in Decreerchar, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Initiated by a group of young students led by Mr. M.A. Jalil—now the Executive Director—the organization was built on the vision of creating a just, extortion-free, and self-reliant society in Bangladesh. AKK began its journey with small-scale humanitarian aid and gradually expanded its efforts through savings groups and adult literacy programs aimed at empowering char communities. In 1993 and 1998, it gained legal registration from the NGO Affairs Bureau and Department of Social Welfare, which allowed it to scale its development initiatives. A major breakthrough came in 1991 with its first grant/loan of BDT 100,000 from PKSF for promoting women entrepreneurship. Since then, AKK has implemented 41 development projects and programs with support from numerous international and national donors, including Oxfam, ActionAid Bangladesh, BRAC, Andheri-Hilfe Bonn, CDD, APHD, PKSF, IFAD, DANIDA, World Bank, Norec, NGO Forum, CDRMP, Plan Inaternational, Concern Worldwide, Christian Aid, the Ministry of Women Affairs, and several UN agencies. The organization has worked with diverse vulnerable groups such as rural poor people, farmers, women, youth, children, migrants, and disaster-affected people. Its key focus areas include women and youth entrepreneurship, ecological farming, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction (DRR), char livelihood development, education, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), health and nutrition, human rights advocacy, adolesent girl, protection of HIV, and infrastructure development. Through these efforts, AKK has significantly contributed to the socio-economic development and resilience of marginalized communities across Bangladesh.
